The first oral contraceptive approved for over-the-counter use in the United States will become available this month. The medication, known as Opill, will be sold in stores and online for $19.99 for a one-month supply and $49.99 for a three-month supply. Opill is a progestin-only pill that was previously approved under a different name in 1973. It is 98% effective at preventing pregnancy with perfect use, and about 91% effective with typical use. Opill should not be used by individuals with breast cancer or certain medications. It does not require an age restriction and is associated with fewer blood clots. Side effects of Opill include irregular bleeding, cramps, headache, and nausea. While Opill offers a new option for birth control, it is important to continue visiting healthcare providers for necessary screenings and ongoing care.
